What are values?
Values are the deeply held principles that guide our choices and behaviours and influence our emotions. They help define who we are, what we believe and how we live. Values can be Personal, Organisational and Societal. There is a growing body of evidence that engaging with values is beneficial in more ways than we might imagine.
The UK Values Alliance is a collaborative group that is seeking to promote values in society. We formed as a result of the recent UK National Values Survey, which demonstrated a large gap between the personal values of UK residents and the values they see at a national level. We are a hub for individuals and organisations active or interested in the field of values. Our belief is that by acting together, we can make a bigger difference than we can by acting alone. Our stated purpose is to build a better UK society by helping individuals and organisations be more aware of, understand and live their values.
In October 2012, just after the Olympics, the Barrett Values Centre (BVC) conducted a survey of the UK’s values. This was one of 26 such country surveys that have been conducted by BVC around the world. The survey was conducted in partnership with the Office for National Statistics (ONS) amongst a representative sample of 4000 UK residents. The results were quite shocking and they led to the formation of the UK Values Alliance.
